·  для вираження мети:  Sam went to the shop to buy some milk. – Сем пішов до магазину, щоб купити молока.

·  після певних дієслів, таких як agree, appear, decide, expect, hope, plan, promise, refuse: I plan to visit my relatives on Sunday.Я планую відвідати своїх родичів у неділю.

·  після прикметників, що описують почуття, (не)бажання, характер: I will be glad to help. Я буду рада допомогти.

·  після LUCKY та FORTUNATE: He`s lucky to survive. Йому пощастило, що він вижив.

·  після too/enough: They are too young to go to school. Вони занадто молоді, щоб ходити до школи.

·  зі структурою it + be + іменник / прикметник: It is necessary to come in time. – Необхідно прийти вчасно.

·  зі структурами be + the first / the second / the next/ the last / the best: You`re the first to call me upon my arrival. – Ти перший, хто подзвонив мені після мого приїзду.

·  після ask, learn, find out, wonder, want to know, decide, explain, якщо після них є питальні слова (who, what, where, how, інші, але не why): They decided what to do.Вони вирішили що робити.

·  для вираження віддання конкретної переваги після would like, would love, would prefer: I would prefer to dine out tonight.Я б хотів повечеряти у ресторані сьогодні.

·  коли йдеться про неочікувану подію, яка може виявитись неприємною (часто з only): He arrived at the station only to find out that his train had already left. – Він приїхав на вокзал лише щоб з`ясувати, що його потяг вже відбув.

·  у виразах to begin with, to be honest, to sum up, to tell you the truth: To tell you the truth, his jokes irritate me. – Правду кажучи, його жарти мене дратують.

·  після модальних дієслів have, ought: She has to pass exams successfully in order to get a diploma. Для того, щоб отримати диплом, вона повинна здати екзамени успішно.

·  після модальних дієслів can, could, may, might, must, shall, should: Can you swim? Ти вмієш плавати?

·  після дієслів hear, feel, let, make, see (але не після be heard, be made, be seen, інші пасивні форми): Let it be so.Нехай буде так.

·  для опису завершеної дії, свідком якої був хтось від початку до кінця, з дієсловами feel, hear, listen to, notice, see, watch: I saw a young woman cross the square.Я бачила, як молода жінка перетнула площу.

· після had better, would rather: I would rather do it by myself. Я краще зроблю це сама.

·  як іменник: Diving is my hobby.Дайвінг – це моє хобі.

·  після прийменників: Tom is afraid of driving fast. – Том боїться швидко водити авто.

·  після певних дієслів та фраз, таких як admit, anticipate, appreciate, avoid, confess to, consider, continue, delay, deny, discuss, enjoy, escape, excuse, fancy, finish, get round to, forgive, imagine, involve, in addition to, keep, look forward to, mention, mind, miss, object to, postpone, practice, prefer (doing sth to doing sth else ) prevent, quit, recall, recollect, regret, report, resent, resist, risk, save, spend, stand, suggest, tolerate, understand: Fancy going to the theatre with us?Хочеш піти з нами в театр?

·  після структури go + вид діяльності: I go jogging every morning.Я займаюсь бігом підцюпцем щоранку.

·  після lose, spend, waste (time / money / інше): She spent a lot of money travelling to Australia. – Вона витратила багато грошей, подорожуючи до Австралії.

·  для вираження віддання загальної переваги після dislike, enjoy, hate, like, love, prefer: She likes horse-riding. Їй подобається їзда верхи.

·  для опису незавершеної дії, яку хтось бачив або чув, з дієсловами feel, hear, listen to, notice, see, watch: I listened to the orchestra playing Beethoven.Я слухав, як оркестр грав Бетховена.   

·  після таких виразів, як be busy, it`s no use, it`s (no) good, it`s (not) worth, what`s the use of, can`t help, there`s no point (in), can`t help, can`t stand, be/get used to, have difficulty (in), have trouble, have a hard/difficult time: They have difficulty in understanding the Ukrainian language.Їм важко розуміти українську мову.
